Communication vs. Communications

Have you ever wonder if there is a difference between communication with and without the letter s at the end?

According to new Oxford American Dictionary the term communication refers to the process of interchanging messages. If you are referring to a career degree related to the theory and practice of the spoken, written or technology-mediated word, you are talking about communication. For example:

“I love our communication style!”

“We might need someone with a communication degree for designing a public relations plans.”

However, if you are referring to the means of connecting people and places-such as telephone lines or computers-you do have to include the s at the end of the word. A communications (or telecommunication) specialist deals with the design and maintenance of networks, frequencies, satellites, and other means of connecting people and technology for data transportation.
